Hi, it's Aakankshi

I'm an Early Interventionist for Autism. With over a decade of experience in this field, I am passionate about working with children and families on the spectrum. With focused educational qualifications and prior experience at Ummeed Child Development Center, Mumbai, I specialize in working with children 0-12 with Autism/ADHD/other developmental concerns. I am currently a consulting Student Counsellor and Behaviour+SEL Specialist at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Junior School - EYC, and a consulting Autism Interventionist at Integrated Services, Opera House.

I use a play-based approach, and my strategies usually involve making changes in the way that parents arrange the play area, how toys are used, how to use language with our children and in structuring and modifying existing routines.

How Does it Work?

Streamline Your Banking

Sessions are a mix of playtime with your child, and teaching play based strategies for parents. I work with families online, or offer home visits in the setting that your child spends most time in (Mumbai city only).

02

Weekly Session

40 minutes of play based interaction. In online sessions, this would be with the parent and child. 20 minutes of discussion only with parents to help teach skills.

03

Quaterly Progress Review

Look back at old goals to see how much was achieved, and set new goals, or as per the needs of the family, consider reducing the frequency of sessions.

04

Monthly/Quaterly Plans

This is a 90 minute online session. 15-20 minutes of play based interaction of parent+child, followed by 60 minutes of teaching and modifying strategies (with only parents).

Let’s Break It Down

  • Autism is a developmental condition that affects communication, behavior, and social interaction. It’s called a “spectrum” because it affects every child differently. Even if a child does not “look” autistic, hey might still experience challenges in social interactions and communicating with others, and my goal is to help each child navigate the world in a way that is easy and successful for them.

  • Autism cannot be “cured,” There is NO evidence to support that any medication/diet/stem cell therapy/homeopathy or ayurveda can reverse autism. Some medication an help with sleep, seizures or digestive concerns but these are prescribed  by a doctor after an individual evaluation of your child. Please consult a doctor  before starting/stopping any medication. Therapies, education and support can help children learn skills and live independent and thriving lives.

  • Some signs include delayed speech, avoiding eye contact, repeating actions, sensitivity to sound or touch, and difficulty interacting with others. (Every child is unique, so signs can vary.)

  • Autism can often be detected as early as 18 24 months, but therapy can begin even if a  doctor is not completely sure and only considers your child to be “at risk” or showing “early signs”

  • No. Each and every child with autism can make progress and can learn, make friends, and lead an independent life. More schools are open to working with children on the spectrum, and there is a right fit for every individual and I would love to help find what works best for your child.

  • Occupational therapy works on different physical and sensory areas that impact a childs day to day functioning (like the fine motor and gross motor skills needed to walk, jump, hold a crayon, button a shirt). Occupational Therapy will also help to build regulation for when a child has too much or too little energy.

Speech Therapy helps a child communicate effectively – if a child has challenges with producing sounds/strengthening the vocal chords/facial muscles needed to produce sounds, to work on the pace and volume of speech. Speech Therapy can also help with making communication more meaningful like using the correct word/adding words to form a sentence and then sequencing words to make sentences.

Early Intervention - what I do - involves helping a child naturally build the intention to communicate, and to make social and play settings easier. The goal is to help a child regulate their attention skills, to build interest in what others are saying and to be able to build the skills needed to form interpersonal relationships. I also help children build self-regulation

tools, and teach parents strategies on managing distressing behaviors (like hitting/screaming/spitting/throwing things).

You do not need to do everything at once.

Your developmental pediatrician can help to choose which therapy is right for your child. More than one therapy may be recommended, but the needs of a child can change every 3-6 months.
